'Kuselan' – A boon or bane to Tamil cinema

Ever since 'Kuselan' was announced and the exhilarating stills of stylish Rajinikanth were released, expectations began to soar sky high. P. Vasu's decision to make 'Kuselan' after his successful outing in remaking the Malayalam classic 'Manichitra Thazu' as 'Chandramukhi' in Tamil, seemed quite reasonable. Rajinikanth seemed the perfect choice to play a superstar on film.

Both Rajinikanth and P. Vasu have spent decades as filmmakers in Tamil Cinema and yet seem to have completely lost the plot when it comes to presenting their latest release. Despite a lovely story that presents itself as an ode to friendship, can a character exist in a film with just a tag and no plausible role to perform? An insight into the fact that even the tremendously adulated larger-than-life Rajinikanth can never be above the story. This is something Tamil filmmakers will have to think about very seriously.

This is probably the reason why Sreenivasan, the writer of this story made it a point to showcase Mammooty (who played the superstar's role in the Malayalam original 'Katha Parayumbol' for less than ten minutes in the entire film because he carries a tag with no role to perform till the end. If this had been the case with 'Kuselan' things might have been very different.

P. Vasu seems to have banked more on the star appeal of Rajinikanth than what the actor portrays on screen. A major miscalculation. Nayantara has been featured in a nothing role and every time she is seen on screen, the director's thirst to incorporate glamorous scenes cry out loud making mincemeat and mockery of the storyline.

The story of the real protagonist of the film played by Pasupathi and his livelihood have been made in a refreshing manner but then 20 minutes into the film one gets the feeling the lead character had walked out of the sets of 'Veyyil' only to walk into 'Kuselan'.

The final twenty minutes of the film showcases Rajinikanth's inimitable style of narration and appeal synchronizing with the storyline. A sense of great relief can be felt amidst the audiences especially because the irritating 'beating-about-the- bush' sequences are over once and for all and there is an emotion that the audience can finally relate with.

'Kuselan' an adapted remake comes across as a 'what could have been' movie rather than a 'what is' movie.

The film also gives insight into two main facets of filmmaking that no one can ever change – no matter what.

  • The story has to be the 'superstar' of the film and actors will have to strengthen it (even if the actor is Rajinikanth).
  • There is no such thing as a sure-shot filmmaker until and unless the basics of storytelling are adhered to with loads of creativity and hard work.

'Kuselan' sure has been successful in making many think along these lines. Probably it's time.

'Kuselan' will not spoil Shahrukh's chances – Priyadarshan

'Kuselan' will not spoil Shahrukh's chances – Priyadarshan

'Kuselan' has released with heightened fanfare and is running to packed houses in Tamilnadu and Andhra Pradesh. As already reported Rajinikanth's 'Kuselan' is the remake of the Malayalam film 'Katha Parayumbol' written by Sreenivasan.

Another Malayalam filmmaker who has been quite successful in Hindi films as well, Priyadarshan, is remaking the film in Hindi with Shahrukh Khan and Irfan Khan in the lead roles and the movie is called 'Billoo Barber'.

There was speculation in the media that 'Kuselan' would be dubbed in Hindi soon. According to this information, Shahrukh Khan was reportedly in panic because Hindi audiences would see Rajinikanth in the role he is slated to play. 'Billoo Barber is expected to be released during the Diwali season.

This report also added that Rajinikanth had stepped in and assured Shahrukh Khan that the dubbed version of 'Kuselan' would not be released before Diwali.

A new light is now thrown on this entire episode. Director Priyadarshan has declared that 'Kuselan' cannot be dubbed into any other language.

Says Priyadarshan, 'when P. Vasu and his team approached Sreenivasan for acquisition of copyright, he consulted with me. We agreed to go ahead with all their requests because they were adamant Rajinikanth would be cast in the film. However, we made sure to include a clause that said 'Kuselan' cannot be dubbed in any other language'.

Priyadarshan also added that 'Billoo Barber' would be very different from 'Kuselan'. 'Only the ending of both the movies would be the same. I have always maintained that Irfan Khan would be the main character of the film and not Shahrukh Khan'.

'Rajinikanth is introduced in the film riding a winged horse. My portrayal of the 'superstar' character would be more on a realistic approach. It will be very different from 'Kuselan' said an assertive Priyadarshan.

With Priyadarshan's statement, all speculation as to 'Kuselan' spoiling Shahrukh Khan's dreams can be laid to rest once and for all.

Meena speaks out on ‘Kuselan’

"Accolades are pouring from all quarters for my performance in 'Kuselan'", says a happy Meena.

She played the role of Pasupathi's wife in the film and the character had enough and more scope to bring out her inner acting strengths. "All credit to P Vasu sir who considered me the apt choice for the role", she says.

Meena enacted the same role in the Malayalam original ‘Katha Parayumbol’. "Since I had to do the same role, I had no tension enacting it", she says with glee.

"It was a dream-come-true-experience for me to share the screen with Rajinikanth sir. Beginning with ‘Anbulla Rajnikanth’, I have acted in six films with the 'Super Star' so far", she says and adds, "Appreciation for my performance is pouring in from various quarters. I consider this the greatest moment of my life".

Asked why she is very choosy these days, Meena says, "I want to choose only the right scripts. Only those films which have a challenging role for me would appease me".

Aishwarya Rai on ‘ROBOT’

Aishwarya Rai has finally spoken out on ‘Robot’. The former Miss World has said that she has earmarked the entire month of September to shoot for Rajinikanth's ‘Robot’.

'Rajini and director Shankar have been very busy over the past few weeks with the groundwork for ‘Robot’. I will join them in September,' said Aishwarya, when asked about the mega project.

Meanwhile, Rajini told reporters in Thirupathi a couple of days ago that he along with director Shankar would leave for the US soon to start filming ‘Robot’, which is being jointly produced by Ayngaran and Eros International.

Will Rajinikanth and Aishwarya Rai paint the town red together?

Let's wait and see.

Rajinikanth clarifies

 Kuselan Gallery

A press meet was held in the morning of 2nd August and superstar Rajinikanth clarified his stand on the recent 'apology' he had made to the Kannada media.

'I am happy where I stand today. My speech during the protest meeting over the Hogennakkal issue was directed only to the people who indulged in violence and not to Kannadigas in general' said Rajinikanth.

Speaking at a function organized to distribute financial aid to the technicians who worked for his latest film 'Kuselan', Rajinikanth said, 'Now I say that I have learnt my lesson'.

It may be recalled that Rajini's reported apology to Kannadigas evoked protests from a section of Tamil film personalities.

Earlier, speaking at the function, director Balachander said, 'I discovered Rajinikanth and know him very well as a man of principles and integrity. He had only expressed his regret and did not apologize. Put an end to this once and for all and let us not be party to a fight within Tamil cinema'. He also appealed to everyone to stay united.

P Vasu, Pushpa Kandasamy and P.T. Vijayakumar of Seven Arts were also present on the occasion.

'Rajini on a sticky wicket'

Though most 'Rajini fans' celebrated the release of 'Kuselan', Rajinikanth's regret to the Kannada chauvinists for his remarks on the Hogenakkal issue has won him the wrath of many from the film industry.

South India Film Artistes' Association president Sarath Kumar wanted to know why his friend (Rajini) regretted his speech and what he meant by saying 'he had learnt a lesson'.

'He must clarify his apology to the people of Tamilnadu who have made him the Superstar,' he said.

Actor Sathyaraj said, "It is a disgrace not just to him but also to his fans. If Kannada organizations had threatened to stall the release of my movie in Karnataka, I would happily compensate my producers and distributors from my own pocket rather than apologize to them".

Actor-director Vijaya T Rajendar said, 'Rajni wanted to showcase himself as a hero. But now he proved that he is a zero.'

Rajini pips Kamal for top spot

'Dasavatharam' has successfully completed a 50-day run in over 500 screens across the globe. A technical marvel, featuring Kamal Haasan in ten different roles, has won appreciation from film-buffs all around the globe.

The movie's good show at the box office has brought smiles on the face of its producer Aascar Ravichandran and director K S Ravikumar. 'Dasavatharam' topped the box office until Friday, but then with 'Kuselan' getting released, Kamal Haasan has been pipped by Rajinikanth straightaway.

The big release of 'Kuselan' has reached the top slot as expected. The movie, released by Pyramid Saimira, has reported full houses everywhere. The phenomenal Rajini factor has worked wonders and Rajinikanth fans have ensured a fantastic opening for the movie. Moreover, the word-of-mouth publicity for the movie is also good.

In the coming weeks, 'Kuselan' will undoubtedly reign supreme. A remake of the Malayalam hit 'Katha Parayumbol', it is directed by P Vasu and stars Pasupathy, Nayantara, Meena, Vadivelu, Prabhu alongside Rajinikanth.

Kuselan Movie Review - Tamil

Kuselan - An ode to friendship and of course Rajinikanth

How many times have you walked out of a theatre emotionally choked up after watching a Rajinikanth film? How many times have you seen Rajinikanth not uttering a punch dialogue in his films? How many times have you not seen Rajinikanth flexing his muscles and bashing the baddies in his movie?

Watch ‘Kuselan’, where one can find a completely different Rajinikanth – the real Rajinikanth, the human being. The movie is perhaps an answer to his critics who have been criticizing the actor for doing routine 'commercial masalas'. Thanks to P Vasu, Rajinikanth reinvents himself bringing out the actor within him through this film. One thing is very clear. He has not acted to commercial compulsions.

The movie throws light on the real Rajinikanth, who has been quite a puzzle with millions of his fans. And the star himself answers questions that have been plaguing the minds of millions of his fans. Want to know the answers to why Rajini has not entered politics? Why the superstar often goes to the Himalayas? Why the actor still prefers to work in run-of-the-mill stuff?

‘Kuselan’ has got all the answers. With Rajinikanth by his side, P Vasu has come out with a message that is quite though provoking. The usual adage is 'Matha Pitha Guru Deivam'. With ‘Kuselan’ the adage gets an addition - 'Matha Pitha Guru Nanban Deivam'.

He plays the 'Super Star' himself and does not at any time impose himself on screen. Watching Rajinikanth play the role with consummate ease is like watching Sachin Tendulkar on song at the middle of the crease. It's like listening to Beethoven's symphony sitting under the moonlight. Though the story doesn't revolve around Rajinikanth, he manages to leave his indelible presence on screen. Especially towards the climax, an emotional Rajinikanth identifies his friend recalling their good old innocent days. These are sequences that evoke tears to our eyes bring the human side of each of us to the forefront.

It is a tough task for an actor like Pasupathy to carry the entire burden on his shoulders acting alongside a scene stealer like Rajinikanth. As a poor barber, fighting for survival, he evokes all the sympathy. Seemingly an extension of his role in ‘Veyyil’, Pasupathy passes out with flying colors. Hats off to him!

Meena as his caring wife is more of a realistic portrayal. She understands the emotional struggles of her husband and gives him the much needed solace and comfort. She sure manages to get under the skin of her character and has done an extremely good job.

Nayanthara plays herself in the film and executes the job entrusted to her quite well. She plays a heroine in films, who shoots for a movie alongside Rajinikanth. She fulfills the glamour quotient and serves the purpose indeed well. Vadivelu's comedy compliments the script well. His trick to get an audition with Rajinikanth, who is shooting in the village brings down the roof with laughter.

The movie boasts of a huge star cast including Livingston, M S Baskar, Sona, Geetha, Fathima Babu, Brahmanandham, Chinni Jayanth. All have significant parts to play in the film.

Prabhu plays a cameo while a host of stars including Sneha, Soundarya Rajinikanth, Suriya among others appear for the ‘Cinema Cinema’ song.

Kuselan is about two childhood friends, with one becoming the Numero Uno in the film industry, while the other lands up as a barber in a hamlet.

Balakrishnan alias Bala (Pasupathy) is a poor barber in a village. He leads a happy life with his wife Sreedevi (Meena) and his children, until a film crew lands in their village to shoot for a movie. Coming to know that Super Star Ashok Kumar (Rajinikanth) has come for shooting in the village, and also with the understanding that he is Bala's childhood friend, villagers flock to Bala's house with favors. A man with tremendous self dignity, Bala fears to meet Ashok Kumar thinking that he may not identify him. But, when the two meet after a long gap, the emotional drama between the pals, sets up an emotional 20-minute climax.

Complimenting Vasu's hard work are Arvindh Krishna's excellent cinematography and the brilliant musical score by G V Prakash Kumar. The catchy numbers ‘Om zarerare’ and ‘Cinema Cinema’ have especially been captured in an attractive manner by Aravindh Krishna. The background score towards the climax sets up the momentum.

Hats off to director P Vasu! The film-maker, who knows the knack of remaking a Malayalam hit in Tamil, has rendered a movie that has the right packaging of emotions. He has intelligently packaged the movie with commercial elements that a hardcore Rajinikanth fan would love without spoiling the crux.

Produced by Pushpa Kandaswamy and Vijayakumar, ‘Kuselan’ is a movie that would go down well with Rajinikanth fans and this is a great opportunity to see the real side of this spectacular actor though on celluloid.

Kuselan Review | Telugu Kuselan Review

If you want to see and enjoy a family drama with sentiment, clean comedy and neat portrayals, Kuselan is the only answer among all the recent releases. Kuselan, truly the most awaited movie of the year is released amidst lot of expectation and fanfare today and no doubt the film is surely a different attempt by Superstar Rajinikanth and Vasu.

First we should congratulate Rajini and director P Vasu for the honest remake of the meaningful Malayalam original Katha Parayumbol (of course there are some cliches, but those are tolerable!). The gist of the story is very simple but interesting. Rajini wants to convey the importance of true friendship. 'Matha, Pitha, Guru, Nalla Nanban and finally God' is the new lineup that the Superstar follows in real life too and the message to convey the young generation to follow.

Balu alias Balakrishnan (Pasupathy) is a poor barber, who is living in a tiny village Marayur and struggling to manage his day today life with a beautiful wife (Meena) and three children. He is unable to buy some good basic equipment to develop his barber shop located in the local Market. But he is quite satisfied with what he has despite the antics of his competitor (cum one time assistant!) Vadivelu, who earns lot of money by forcing local people to visit his shop for cutting and shaving.

One day the entire climate of the village totally changes just because of the arrival of Superstar Ashok Kumar (Rajinikanth) for shooting his film. Everyone in the village go to see and take photographs with the Superstar. But heavy police and Z category security force prevent them to have a glimpse of the Superstar.

Meanwhile news spreads around the village that Balu and the Superstar are close childhood friends. After knowing the fact, everyone in the village give new respect to Balu and his family. The local money lender comes forward to help him to develop his saloon with all brand new modern equipments to just get an intro with the Superstar. Everyone in the village wants to cash in on their friendship.

But just because of his ego, Balu does not like to even pay a visit to the guest house where the Superstar is staying. But the entire village, including his own family members force him to visit the Superstar and renew their relationship. How do the old friends meet at last? The question leads to the sensational, never ever seen climax of the film.

For years, many have doubts and questions about Rajinikanth's personal life, Himalayan trips, saint like life style and political interests. In a face to face conversation between Rajini and a critic (Sundar Rajan), P Vasu exposes the other side of the Superstar well. The way Rajinikanth replies to all the queries of Sundar Rajan is excellent and it helps the Superstar himself to satisfy a faction of people, who are always pinpoint him.

No doubt, Rajini is the real star of the entire show. From the second reel itself the film rounds the Superstar. Most of the scenes reflect Rajini's real life incidents and not even exaggerated a bit. Performance wise Rajini easily overtakes all the characters and particularly in the sensational climax everyone is stunned with the outstanding, class performance of Rajinikanth. (I have witnessed that most of the young audiences came out from the show with tear and mostly women audience hail the superior performance of Rajini!)

Pasupathy who comes throughout the movie has done his role well. Meena just repeats the same performance that she has already done in the original. Vadivelu is one of the real winners of the show. Particularly in a scene with the superstar, Vadivelu has played well and showed the exact feelings of a villager while he is happening to see a superstar once in his poor life. Nayantara is just appearing as the co-star of the movie and she has also done her job quite well. Other comedians Santhanam, Livingston, MS Bhaskar, Brammanandam, Chinni Jayanth have also played their part well and help a lot maintain the tempo of the film.

Aravind Krishna gives a new tone to the movie and his style of picturisation is really good. Three songs of GV Prakash Kumar are hummable but the opening song of the Superstar is not up to the level to Rajini's earlier films. The Superstar is just appearing in the film for just 40 minutes. But most of the audiences feel that it is a different but complete Rajini movie. That is the magic of superstar Rajinikanth!

Kuselan Tickets Coming soon...

Half of 'Kuselan' tickets exclusive to Rajini Fans

Superstar Rajinikanth's 'Kuselan' will grace theaters on the 1st of August and tremendous fanfare is expected from diehard Rajini fans and the general public.

The latest news however is that fifty percent of tickets would be made exclusive only to Rajini fans. The president of the Rajinikanth Fans' Association, Sathyanarayana made it very clear that only fifty percent of tickets would be sold at the theaters that screen 'Kuselan' in the initial weeks.. The rest would be distributed to members of the Rajinikanth Fans' Association.

When 'Kuselan' was announced, Rajinikanth had reportedly said he will just appear in as many sequences as Mammootty had featured in the original Malayalam film 'Katha Parayumbol'. That is somewhere around 18 minutes in a film whose total duration is144 minutes. That's about fifteen percent of screen time.

But then, when 'Kuselan' entered its production stage, the entire plans have changed and the screenplay was altered in such a way that the superstar's screen time would be much higher. This is what probably happens when a big star fits into a small story.

As per latest reports, Rajinikanth is appearing in three out of the five songs in the film and will take equal share on screen with Pasupathy who plays the role of the poor barber, played in the original by Sreenivasan.

P Vasu, the director of 'Kuselan', has taken special care to present the superstar as being young and vibrant. The director had no inhibitions when he announced that the film would be an out and out Rajinikanth film.

The movie is distributed by Pyramid Saimira. In Kerala , the movie is released by Seven Arts International, who incidentally is also a co producer of the film.

'Kuselan' will grace 80 centers in Kerala.

'Kuselan' Fever in Bay Area

'Kuselan' fever is catching up in the United States. After introducing the cut-out culture in USA, the Super Star's sensationalism doesn't just seem to end there. A group of hard-core enthusiastic fans, have tagged up with the sponsors Pyramid Saimira Entertainment Group, Narmadha Travels and Tirupathi Bhimas planning for a 'Kuselan' pre-release launch on Friday, the 25th of July.

The launch is going to happen in Thiruapthi Bhimas restaurant itself. There is going to be a slogan contest in which prizes will be given away for every one hour for the winning slogans. Since 'Kuselan' is a movie which portrays the greatness of friendship, the participants are expected to write a slogan about their best friend and the winners' details are going to be published online.

Bay Area Rajini Fans have also planned for an exclusive screening of Super Star Rajinikanth's videos, 'Kuselan' slideshow, etc at the restaurant. Already, there have been numerous enquiries about the ticket sales. According to the distrubtor, Jayavel Murugan of Narmadha Travels, people are very anxious to get the tickets for the opening weekend itself.

'Kuselan' 'Rajini special' chocolates invade USA

M&M the American equivalent of Cadbury Gems in India is coming up with chocolates with the image of superstar Rajinikanth on them at a time when the highly awaited 'Kuselan' is to hit screens across the United States of America.

For the first time ever in the history of the USA, an Indian film actor is being featured in highly sought-after products. M&M is a huge household name in the United States when it comes to candy. It is a brand that is synonymous with sweets and is adored by kids as well as adults. It is this company that wants to be associated with the Indian film superstar in a bid to woo Rajini fans in the United States. Customizing superstar Rajinikanth image on the candies is indeed a phenomenal beginning and a valid recognition to the star power the Indian actor enjoys in far away United States.

'We have ordered 20 pounds of candies for every city where the movie is screened in the USA and will be distributed to Rajini Fans on the premier show' said Jayavel Murugan, a major distributor of Indian films in the USA. He is extremely happy at the unbelievable response the movie has generated in the USA.

Every Rajini movie in the recent past has generated a lot of interest among multitudes of people from Indian origin. 'Kuselan' is in many ways the moment of reckoning pertaining to all the interest generated over the years.

Rajini imprinted M&M candies and huge vinyl cutouts will light up the launch of superstar Rajinikanth's 'Kuselan' in all cities in the USA. Imagine huge Rajini cut-outs at all the theaters releasing 'Kuselan' and candies with Rajini images being showered on all those coming for the premier show. Just perfect.

Movie lovers coming in for the premier shows would not only be showered with the candies but will also be treated to mouth-watering 'Rajini Special' Dosas. All this has the look and feel of a carnival. This carnival atmosphere can be created in movie theaters only by the magnificent aura that the name Rajinikanth creates.

A slice of India is being experienced in the United States and it sure is a welcome sign.

Pyramid Saimira distributes 'Kuselan' in the USA. 'We are ordering a total of 50 prints for USA and no city would be without the movie's launch on the release weekend', said a representative.

Rajinikanth to woo Japanese fans

Rajinikanth is going to Japan and perhaps with, his new film Kuselan. Rajini is already an iconic figure to many Japanese fans though he never been to the country ‘Land of the Rising Sun’.

The South Indian Diaspora in Japan naturally is fans to this Super Star, but surprisingly the legend has huge following amongst native Japanese too. The Japanese call him the Dancing Maharaja! And admire him for his energetic dancing, fighting skills, and abundant talent in comedy, drama and emotion. The local stores have DVD's of all his movies. Ten years ago his film Muthu ran for 23 weeks at a Tokyo Theatre and watched by over one lakh Japanese. Now the release of a new film of Rajnikanth is a cause for celebration.

Receiving an invitation from the Tokyo International Film Festival, Rajni is preparing to take Kuselan to Japan. However, his visit to Tokyo is not yet confirmed; however, Kuselan will be a treat for them to watch the Star in a younger and more dynamic role than Shivaji – The Boss. Incidentally, Kuselan is also being made in Hindi title as 'Billo Barber’ with Shah Rukh Khan in the lead role. The centre theme of the films is friendship and is slated to be released internationally in the first week of August to coincide with World Friendship Day.

Superstar Rajinikanth ROCKS in Kuselan Trailer

One look at the full length trailer of 'Kuselan' and your jaw would drop in awe and admiration at the style and magnificence of Rajinikanth's personality in 'Kuselan'. The superstar looks decades younger and his body language is just about perfect with stunning precision.

Watch Kuselan Trailer

As actor Sathyaraj famously said once, 'Rajini's body language is great even when he sleeps', the man of the moment Rajinikanth has done justice to his part as a star on screen. The trailer also reveals many things. An insight into the story of how a world which was common for two boys had drifted apart creating two different worlds as time the weary traveler moves on stealthily.

Vadivelu looks comical and vibrant. One look at him and you are sure to have a good laugh. Wonder what the twin mustache does for him. The mustache grows bigger and smaller at will. Wonder what controls that?

The music and the general appeal of the trailer sure carries the soul of the film at its flamboyant best.

P. Vasu, the master at amalgamating good stories and the commercial element seems to have gotten out of the correct side of his bed when he started off with 'Kuselan'. Everything seems to have fallen in place. Rajinikanth of course is the star….be it the trailer or the full length film.

The superstar rocks in this trailer.

Finalizing Rajini's looks for Robo

Director Shankar and costume designer Manish Malhotra are busy men these days. They have the rather pleasant task of stylizing superstar Rajinikanth in such a way that he jells with the character he plays in the film. Initial reports indicate that Rajinikanth would play a young scientist in the film and would be seen in a rather eccentric getup.

But then, what is a Rajini film without style and substance? Manish Malhotra is a big name when it comes to dressing up popular stars. His work in 'Sivaji' was 'to the point' and brilliant. The Shankar-Malhotra combine would most definitely want to recreate the stunning Rajini demeanor with Robo as well. To finalize his looks, photo-shoots were held at the AVM studios and a popular studio in Nungambakkam. Rajinikanth dressed up in Manish Malhotra's costumes and reportedly looked dazzling.

Rajinikanth is not all that young anymore and so requires wigs these days. Many of his fans still believe that no wig can actually live up to his original hair. But then his original hair is lost forever and so hairstylist Banu was roped in for 'Sivaji'. She has been restored with the responsibility for 'Robo' as well.

Shankar is known to experiment and so he is expected to organize many more photo-shoots before actually finalizing the star's looks. Aishwarya Rai who plays Rajinikanth's leading lady in 'Robo' is currently on a world tour with her husband and in-laws. As soon as she gets back to India, another round of photo-shoots are expected to take place.

Animated Rajinikanth starts work

Superstar Rajinikanth is starting work in his daughter Soundarya Rajinikanth's film 'Sultan – The Warrior' today. Shooting is happening in a 3D Motion Capture studio in Hyderabad.

It has been confirmed that Vijayalakshmi would be playing the leading lady in the film and not Ileana as reported earlier.

Motion Capture technology entails actors to be wired up with infrared lights and as the actor moves, the movements are recorded onto a computer. These movements would then be applied to 3D models that are designed after the actors.

This is the very first time that a 3D animation movie is being made based on an Indian actor. Rajinikanth's unique body language and mannerisms would be reflected completely on the 3D model that's going to play Sultan – the warrior.

The movie is being produced by Ocher Studios owned by Soundarya Rajinikanth and is expected to be released in 2009.

'Kuselan' countdown starts

Just a few more days are left for the release of 'Kuselan'. Rajinikanth fans are planning to celebrate the release of the movie in a big way.

The movie would be getting released in over 10 screens across Chennai. Distributed by Pyramid Saimira worldwide, the advance booking for 'Kuselan' is set to begin very soon. 1200 prints have been made ready for 'Kuselan' worldwide.

Since 'Chandramukhi' and 'Sivaji' went on to become big hits, 'Kuselan' is expected to complete a hat-trick of hits for Rajinikanth. The combination of the superstar and P. Vasu is known for striking gold at the box office.

As already reported, the song is a tribute to 75 years of South Indian Cinema and superstar Rajinikanth himself. The song will also delve into the working atmosphere of all the technicians who have come together in making the film 'Kuselan'. Since Soundarya is in charge of the 'graphics' part, she has been shot in a 'working mode' in her office.

Similarly, G. V. Prakash has also been shot in a 'working mode'. Chandramukhi also had its director P. Vasu, producer Ramkumar and music director Vidyasagar egging on the audience by shouting 'Repeat' in the song 'Devuda….Devuda'.

Every single news about 'Kuselan' is exciting and more such info is expected to be pouring in till the movie's release.

Ileana in Rajini's Sultan

Tollywood glam doll Ileana has been roped in to act with 'Superstar' Rajinikanth in ‘Sultan The Warrior’, an animated film being directed by the top actor's daughter Soundarya.

Ileana, who entered Kollywood with ‘Kedi’ opposite Ravi Krishna, would begin her second innings in Tamil filmdom with Sultan.

Besides, she has also been asked to share the screen with Vikram in a movie to be directed by K S Ravikumar. Vikram would act in two different roles in this project.

The movie is produced by Soundarya Rajinikanth's Ocher Studios. A R Rahman is scoring the music.

“It is privilege to do a movie on my father, who is a mass hero and man admired by the masses”, says Soundarya.

‘Sultan The Warrior’ would hit the screens in April 2008.

'Kuselan' in Hindi, Kannada now

Noted Malayalam actor Srinivasan's 'Katha Parayumbol' is going places rather quickly. The acclaimed Malayalam hit is now ready for release in Tamil and Telugu starring Rajinikanth.

Titled 'Kuselan' and 'Kathanayukudu' in Tamil and Telugu respectively, the movie is directed by P Vasu.

Buzz is that director Priyadarshan has already starting work on the project and plans are on to remake it in Hindi with Shah Rukh Khan in the lead role.

Rumors are doing the rounds that efforts are being taken to remake the movie in Kannada now. In all probability, Ramesh Aravind and Golden Star Ganesh might be part of the project.

The film is all about two childhood friends among whom one becomes a superstar in the movies and the other becomes a rustic barber.

The sensitive theme of the movie has already created waves and it looks like the story would be very valid across cultures.

Rajinikanth's 'Sultan - The Warrior' to release in April 2009

The much-awaited Rajinikanth starring animated movie 'Sultan -The Warrior' featuring Rajinikanth will hit movie screens in April 2009. April is considered to be an auspicious month for Rajinikanth for all his films released in April have gone on to become big hits.

After scouting in Vietnam for selecting the backdrops to shoot the movie, the film crew was back in Chennai recently. Rajinikanth is now expected to join the crew to commence work in a Motion Capture Animation Studio in Hyderabad to shoot for the movie. It would be later animated.

Motion Capture technology entails the artist to be fitted with infra red lights that can be tracked on the computer. All the actions performed by the actor would then be applied to the 3D model. Incredibly, the 3D model (designed just like Rajinikanth) would do exactly the same actions that the star performs in the studio. Movies like 'Titanic' used this technology with stuntmen in studios and later adapted on live action sequences (people washed away by water) to get the stunning scenes as real as possible.

'Sultan – The Warrior' has five songs set to tunes by A R Rahman and it would be released next february. The movie is being produced and directed by Soundarya Rajinikanth for her home production house Ocher Studios.

'Robot' goes 'crystal ball' gazing

Though predictions come true or not, Tamil Cinema is well known for going by what astrologers predict. An interesting tidbit about the much hyped and highly anticipated film 'Robot' starring superstar Rajinikanth and Aishwarya Rai seems to be in consultation with a famous astrologer.

Sources have indicated that a top personality involved with the project had taken director Shankar's horoscope to the astrologer in a bid to find out about the film's prospects. The astrologer in turn had wanted to meet Shankar in person before going ahead with the predictions. Shankar had an audience with the astrologer and certain 'revelations' were made.

According to the astrologer, Shankar's 'time' is good at the moment and will continue to be so for a few years. However, with regards to 'Robot', the movie must be made immediately in order to have a dream run worldwide. A delay in its release might even doom the movie to failure.

This information has reportedly rattled the director. One will have to wait and see if the director takes the astrologer's prediction seriously and start filming at once.

It is not know if the astrologer is a fan of the Rajini – Shankar combination and is in haste to see the movie released quickly.

In Kuselan, superstar Rajinikanth will feature in three of the five songs. He will be introduced in the film by the song, ‘Cinema…Cinema’. This song, featuring about 10 frontline actors of Kollywood, will laud the effort of each and every artist involved in filmmaking, right from lightboys to actors to directors to fans.

The filming was completed on June 26, 2008; this was the last song to be shot; it was shot with 400 real fans of Rajni (instead of junior artists) at Shanti theatre. The song also contains lines that talk about Rajinikanth: ‘Super star-i thiraiyil parthaal adhirumthaney, maalaigal ellam malai pola kuviyumthaney’. It means the appearance of Superstar (Rajinikanth) on screen will electrify the atmosphere.

If ‘Cinema…cinema’ is one highlight song, ‘Om Zaarare’ sung by Daler Mehendi is another. This song runs for 7 minutes and has been sung by Daler Mehendi, Chitra, and Sadhana Sargam. Pasupathy and Meena will be featured in the other two songs.

Initial reports suggest that all the actors who performed in 'Kuselan' would also be present. However, this is yet to be confirmed officially.

Many production houses have come out with novel ways of attracting the general public's attention to their movies. We recently witnessed Jackie Chan at the audio launch of 'Dasavatharam'.

The concept of a live show playing out the music of the film is indeed very attractive. However this has nothing to do with the audio launch. The audio launch for Kuselan would happen as planned on the 30th of June at Hotel Le Royal Meridian at 7 pm in Chennai. Attractive booklet style invitations have already been handed out to guests.

This film would also be a major benchmark in G. V. Prakash's career. 23 years of age and has bowled over the likes of Rajinikanth, P. Vasu and K. Balachander.

Prabhu joins Rajini's Kuselan

Every day superstar Rajini's Kuselan is getting bigger and broader shape than its original Kadha Parayumbol. Unlike in the Malayalam original, Rajini has accepted to do the enlarged version of Mammootty's role throughout the film and will be seen singing two duets with Nayanthara and feature in two action sequences to add the commercial weight to the film.

Now, Prabhu, one of the actors close to the superstar also joins the cast of Kuselan. He will play the vital role as Mukesh did in the original version. Prabhu accepted to do the role on the personal and invitation from Rajini. So far Prabhu and Rajini have appeared in three movies.

His last movie with Rajini was Chandramukhi, a historical blockbuster of the superstar produced by Prabhu. It is also being said that action king Arjun has will appear with Rajini in few scenes in Kuselan.

Daler Mehndi sings in Tamil for 'Kuselan'

The magic and mayhem around superstar Rajinikanth's 'Kuselan' is getting bigger by the day. The audio album of the movie will hit the market on July 1 across the country. G. V. Prakash has reportedly come out with very good songs and Punjabi pop king Daler Mehndi will be singing in Tamil for the first time. Lending his inimitable voice for the song 'Oyam Zaarare' this is the first time the popular singer will be featured in a South Indian song.

Rajnikanth's Kuselan sold!

The star power of Tamil superstar Rajnikanth is simply awesome. Whether he is the lead actor or guest appearance, any film of his becomes the hottest property in the entertainment market.

Just look at the way Kuselan, a quickie planned with Rajnikanth in a 'guest role', is grabbed by Pyramid Saimira Entertainment Limited, Singapore, a wholly owned subsidiary of Pyramid Saimira Group.

The company has bagged the rights of worldwide release with 11 years Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) of Kuselan, in both Tamil and Telugu. Though the company has not disclosed the amount, rumours have it that the film was bought for an estimated sum of Rs 60 crore!

The company plans a worldwide release the movie by the end of July 2008.

Kuselan is produced by Seven Arts Films from Kerala [Images] and Kavithalaya Group promoted by K Balachandar. In Telugu, it is co-produced by Vyjanthi Movies.

Pyramid Saimira had earlier distributed and exhibited Rajni's Sivaji in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, and Malaysia in 252 screens with 928 shows daily and 6.78 lakh seats.

Kuselan is the Tamil remake of Kadha Parayumbol, one of the most talked about and successful films made in Malayalam in recent times. The way Sreenivasan developed a simple tale of a friendship between a barber and a superstar, into a very appealing screenplay without slipping into melodrama was highly appreciated in Kerala. Rajni who saw the film got so emotional that he hugged Sreenivasan.

Sreenivasan played the barber and Mammootty the superstar. In Tamil, Pasupathy plays Sreenivasan's role and Rajni Mammootty's. Meena, who played Sreenivasan's wife in the original, has done the same role in Tamil too.

Mammootty appeared for just half an hour in the original. It is for sure that P Vasu who directs Kuselan will make the role longer for Rajni like he did in Chandramukhi (a remake of Manichitrathazhu.)

Priyadarshan is remaking the film in Hindi as Billoo Barber with Irrfan Khan playing the barber's role while Shah Rukh Khan as the superstar.

It is interesting to see so many versions of Kadha Parayumbol in 2008!

Rajinikant’s film for his mentor K Balachander will have two heroines.

While Nayanatara is said to be playing one of the lead heroines, it is now been confirmed that Tabu will be playing the other heroine.

Though Rajinikant shares screen time with Jagapati Babu, who will have an equally important role in the film, he has agreed to do it for Balachander and because he liked the Malayalam original starring Mammotty.

G.V. Prakash for Kuselan?

It is almost certain that young music director G.V. Prakashkumar would do the music for superstar Rajinikanth’s next movie ‘Kuselan’ directed by P. Vasu.

The expectations are shooting up ever since the news on the project started leaking. K. Balachandar, along with the co-producers and the director P. Vasu gave a Pongal treat for the fans by making an official announcement on the movie on the auspicious Pongal day (January 15) at Taj Coramandel, in Chennai.

Rajini, who was eagerly awaited by the media persons, joined the event late in the evening. Pasupathy, who dons an important role, also attended the press meet.

The movie’s title is a fine and sensible selection. Kuselan, in Mahabharatha was a poor man and a dear friend of Krishna, the king. The epic talks at length about their deep friendship. Since the movie is about the friendship between a poor man and a celebrity, the title seems to be quite relevant.

The movie will be jointly produced by Seven Arts Vijayakumar, Kavithalaya K Balachander, Pushpa Kandasamy, and Vaijayanthi Movies Aswin Dutt (Telugu producer).

Official announcement on ‘Kuselan’

The official announcement on Rajinikanth’s next movie – a remake of Malayalam hit ‘Katha Parayumbol’ - has finally put a full stop to all speculations. The producers and the director of the proposed movie met the media persons yesterday (January 15) at Taj Coromandel in Chennai, to announce the news.

When Rajini made up his mind to do a film for KB, he had asked director P. Vasu to select a right story for remaking. Vasu selected ‘Katha Parayumbol’, after considering various projects. When Rajini saw this movie he was virtually moved and gave his nod to the project.

Vasu requested the media not to write that Rajini would do an honorary role in the movie. He would act in an important role, said the director. “The whole story revolves around him”, declared Vasu.

The press meet was attended by K. Balachandar, Seven Arts Vijayakumar (the producer of Malayalam original), director P. Vasu, Vaijayanthi Movies Aswin Dutt (Telugu producer), and story writer cum actor Sreenivasan. The movie will be made simultaneously in Tamil and Telugu. Kavithalaya, Seven arts, and Vaijayanthi Movies are the joint producers of the venture, which will be directed by P. Vasu.

Sreenivasan, who wrote the story of ‘Katha Parayumbol’ and donned an important role in the film, was a junior to Rajini in the film institute.
